Ear wax
Impacted ear wax can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, which may include:
The ear is usually self-cleaning; dead skin and wax slowly migrate out of the ear and are washed away in very small quantities when we bathe. This is the ear’s natural “conveyor belt”.
However, sometimes this mechanism malfunctions, and wax and skin become trapped in the ear. This can harden over time and become very difficult to remove.
Ear wax removal
There are various methods that can be used to clear the ear. In all cases we recommend using olive oil ear drops twice a day for 3-4 days before your appointment. Soda Bicarbonate ear drops also work well but these can only be used for a short time because they change the PH in the ear, which can lead to soreness. We do not recommend the use of hydrogen peroxide based drops.
Micro suction earwax removal
This is generally considered the safest method. A small sterile probe is attached to a medical suction device and used to gently remove the wax. This is done under magnification so that a good view of the ear and ear canal is maintained at all times.
Ear syringing
Ear syringe or ear irrigation, as it is sometimes called, involves using water to flush out the ear. It can be an effective method, but is less controlled than micro suction and it is not possible to visualise the ear.
